North East Reverine Hike - 5th May 2012 06/05/2012
Three energetic and young-at-heart folks participated in the hike today. We had expected more participants but a few dropped out at the last moment. I guess today was Vesak and some had family commitments. The weather was excellent. The sky was clouded but there was no rain. The starting point of our hike was Punggol MRT Stn. From there we headed north to Punggol Waterway. This joins the Punggol River on the west to Serangoon River on the east. The walk along the waterway towards the Punggol River was pleasant. Although the Punggol area has seen much development during the last few years, we hardly see any buildings along the waterway. When we reached Punggol River, we turned north. Punggol River is now a reservoir and there is a barrage at the river mouth. As we headed north along the coast we reached Punggol Marina, which is a yacht club. The club was too tempting for us not to go in to have a look. There is a large seafood restaurant in the club but it was too early for us to have lunch. So, we ordered tea and coffee and sat down to enjoy ourselves. A young couple who were at the next table were surprised to learn that we oldies had walked from the MRT stn. to the club. We sat there for an hour and decided to head towards the LRT to catch a train back. But the LRT was not in operation and we followed the line back to Punggol MRT Stn. From the station we went to Serangoon and had lunch at the shopping mall. Hoe Leong kindly hosted the lunch. We thoroughly enjoyed the hike. It was a good occasion for fellowship and to learn about the development in the area. We remembered Punggol in the old days as an undeveloped village and Punggol Point as a place for good seafood and surfing. But it has now changed. Any other place for our next hike? We had an enjoyable hike last Saturday, starting at Labrador, strolling through the marina at Keppel Bay and ending up at Vivo City. Frank was the organiser and there were seven of us. (Peck Heng’s brother took the picture above). We had so much fun that we decided to have another one on 5 May. The next hike will be at Punggol. I propose that we start at Punggol MRT Station, walk towards the Punggol River and head south along the river. Alternatively, if we are game we can take a short ride on the LRT to Punggol Point walk towards the river and head south. The path along the river is part of the North East Riverine Loop and should be quite scenic. South of the river we can take a short ride on the LRT or walk to SengKang MRT station and have our lunch at the Compasspoint shopping mall. The length of the hike is around 5 to 8 km. If we start at 8 am from Punggol MRT station, we should easily end at the shopping mall before 12 pm. Please let me know if you are joining us. Dress like us in the picture and bring a bottle of water. The Young Ones 19/02/2012

_ (Written by one of the sixteen who were present on Sat 10 Dec 2011) When I arrived at Chiu San’s house inside Seletar Camp I saw a pit freshly dug and our ‘young’ buddies crowding round it trying to start a fire. _ _Others were busy chopping or sawing bamboos into the right sizes for cooking rice. _ __Cheng Chit was totally absorbed in wrapping his fish in banana leaves. _ _Then appeared our lovely hostess, Inez, who helped me to unload some provisions. The Saturday afternoon was bright and sunny and I felt guilty for being a late arrival. Backwoods cooking or Backwoodsman cooking may conjure up different images to different people but for a scout (once a scout, always a scout) it is like adrenalin driving the heart to pump faster. _ _Who cares about sauces or marinating the meat. The chicken and the fish taste heavenly even though they are mixed with a bit of carbon. _ _We have decided in advance that we are going to like the food, come what may, the slightly burnt sausages or the half blackened brinjals and sweet potatoes, notwithstanding. _ _This is because the ‘cooked food’ including the almost cooked rice and other delicacies are the result of our past skills and training. This afternoon really drove home the message that we all have to upgrade our skills. Because if we had updated our skills we would surely enjoy more of the food that we have decided to like. _Chiu San was a tough task master. He had laid down the rule that we only eat what we cooked and those that do not cook will not eat. Later, we realized that his tough exterior belies a softer side. Apparently, he had secretly prepared some ‘makan’ just in case there are ‘unforeseen circumstances’. _According to Frank (the C-in-C of operations) a lot of excitement happened in the background. Who do you think has the local knowledge to lead our team to an abandoned farm where wielding his trusty parang he showed the ‘youngsters’ how to chopped down bamboos and a banana tree, to boot. Frank was so impressed that he compared Chiu San to potent ‘old ginger’ and said he ‘thumped his chest’ to show his respect. _Then there were Chee Wee, Dennis and Maurice (he has yet to join our Chapter) among several others who were the quiet heroes doing the supposedly mundane work which is essential in making the cooking session a success. I have left the best for last. Who would have imagined that backwoodsman cooking included not only beer but also a fine selection of malt whiskies like 12 year-old Glenfiddich. _ What I enjoyed more than the food and the drinks were the wonderful camaraderie, the friendships and the delightful conversations on every topic under the sun. There is no need to be envious. Just join the next activity. When was the last time you did backwoods cooking with your batchmates? Does your wife / children know the “Backwoodsmen” scouty part of you?
